Turkey has been main route for migrants trying to cross into Europe.

At least 301 irregular migrants were held across Turkey, security sources said Tuesday, according to security sources.

In the Aegean Izmir province, 37 irregular migrants — including Syrians, Iraqis and Palestinians — were held in the Kusadasi district, said a security source who asked not to be named due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

The migrants attempted to cross to Greek islands via a rubber boat, the source added.

Separately in northwestern Edirne province, a total of 264 migrants including Pakistani, Iraqi, Iranian, Afghan, Bangladeshi, Algerian and Palestinian nationals, were held during gendarmerie patrols in several districts.

All the migrants were referred to provincial migration offices.

Turkey has been a main route for irregular migrants trying to cross into Europe, especially since 2011, when the Syrian civil war began.
